What Are IGCSEs?
IGCSEs are international qualifications developed primarily by Cambridge Assessment International Education (part of the University of Cambridge). They were originally designed for international schools but are now taken by students in over 160 countries, including many home educated students in the UK.
The qualifications cover a similar range of subjects to GCSEs, including English, Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, and Languages. They are graded on the same 9-1 scale used for GCSEs in England (or A*-G for some specifications).
The key advantage for private candidates is the examination-only assessment route. Most IGCSE subjects do not require coursework, controlled assessment, or practical endorsements that need school supervision. This removes a significant barrier for home educated students.
Cambridge International: The Main IGCSE Provider
Cambridge Assessment International Education is the primary provider of IGCSE qualifications worldwide. Their specifications are designed to be accessible to students learning outside traditional school settings.
Cambridge IGCSEs are available in over 70 subjects. Popular choices for UK private candidates include English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, and Geography.
To register for Cambridge IGCSE exams, private candidates must find an approved Cambridge exam centre. Some schools and colleges accept external candidates, and there are dedicated private candidate centres across the UK.
Official information: Cambridge Assessment provides detailed guidance for private candidates on their website.
Cambridge International Private CandidatesIGCSE Exam Sessions and Registration
Cambridge IGCSE exams are offered twice a year:
- May/June session: The main exam window for UK-based candidates. Results are released in August.
- October/November session: A secondary window, with results in January. Fewer UK centres may offer this session.
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams have additional flexibility, with January and June exam sessions available for many subjects.
Registration deadlines are typically 4-6 months before the exam session. Early registration is advisable as centres have limited capacity for private candidates. Late entries may be accepted with additional fees.
This flexibility allows students to spread exams across multiple sessions, resit subjects if needed, or take exams when they feel ready rather than according to a fixed school timetable.
Why Home Educators Choose IGCSEs
Several factors make IGCSEs attractive to home educating families:
- No coursework: Most subjects are assessed entirely through final examinations, removing the need for school-supervised coursework.
- Science accessibility: IGCSE sciences can be taken without practical endorsements, unlike many GCSE specifications. Practical skills are assessed through written questions.
- Flexible timing: Multiple exam sessions per year allow students to take subjects when ready.
- International recognition: Widely accepted by UK and international universities.
- Clear specifications: Cambridge provides comprehensive syllabuses and past papers for independent study.
The examination-only route is particularly valuable for science subjects. While GCSE sciences typically require practical endorsements completed under teacher supervision, IGCSE sciences assess practical understanding through written examination questions.
